In the past, a clear night sky would be full of stars, but in 2057 the earth is surrounded by rings of man made stars; satellites promised to make the world more connected, yet also taking away from the natural beauty of the heavens. There are no more constellations, only machines reflecting the sun’s light in the night sky.
Satellites were promised to serve their lifecycle, then disintegrate as they abandoned their low earth orbit. As the years passed, the truth became evident. The remains of decommissioned satellites became finely particle debris now circling the globe creating a shroud of dust over mankind.
Adjustments had to be made to the satellite’s code, to adjust for communication of solar array problems. A bit of code conflicted with something forgotten in lines and lines of code so many years ago. The satellites stopped communicating with one another. The perfectly plotted lines of travel changed. Each of the thousands of hunks of metal began falling to the earth as if the earth was being carpet bombed by an alien force. The machines were touted as only containing “trace amounts” of radioactive material, but the truth became clear as cities became radioactive cratered wastelands.
