on dark days (drone remix) 03/05/2021

“On dark days” began in April 2000 and was to be released in October 2000. The release was delayed until February 2001 due to some software issues at the time. I can’t remember what they were, this was just in my notes. It was released on Mp3.com as a free download and locally on CD in Springfield IL.

This was my first ambient release which I described at the time as “an ambient reflection of affective moments.” At the time, I was working in the field of mental health, and it was rubbing off on my music. It was recorded in a free version of Opcode using Soundmaker and Absynth along with items around the house.

It was very amateur work. Which is fine. Never being formally trained in music, I still feel what I do is amateur. Initially, I thought of just remastering the original mixes, but the time spent would not really improve what was recorded.

Then I started messing with various effects, and the widely used Paulstretch effect in Audacity really brought interesting life to the recordings. I threw the finished tracks into Logic Pro X, added some additional effects and was happy with the results.

These tracks are slow, droney, and are perfect background soundscapes for zoning out. I started out with hour long tracks each, then saw “the passing” didn’t reach that far, so I decided to edit them down to 30 minutes a piece. Sure they are repetitive, but there are subtle changes which keep them interesting.
