In ancient Sumeria, a person’s afterlife was determined by the conditions of his or her burial, not how they lived.
This is a story of a man who plans his burial perfectly, to exceed the requirements of the gods thus ensuring a perfect afterlife.
However, because of his actions during life, his friends and family do not follow his burial plans, and steal all the fortunes to be used on his burial.
Once his spirit learns of the betrayal, his anger drives him to find a way to return and haunt them.
“I have planned my burial and my next life to be,
Now I learn I am betrayed by my friends and family.
They plotted and planned for this to occur,
To rob me of my eternity and lock me in Kur.
They give me no libations nor gifts to the gods,
My afterlife is now up to the odds.
I only find dust for sustenance,
So I will haunt them eternally for their defiance.”
Track listing and my thoughts:
01 gidim
I wanted at least one track to have a touch of middle eastern flair (yet none of this is musically accurate for time/place). To me, this track has the celebration and sadness of laying him to rest. This album is about transitions, from physical to spiritual, from happiness to sadness, to anger and then revenge.
02 libations
This track focuses more on the celebration side of things. Libations and gifts to the gods is what the spirit requires to have a good afterlife. Are the “friends and family” celebrating his death? You can hear their mocking tone.
03 Kur
Desolation. Uncomfortable conditions. Sadness.
04 the end of offerings
He realizes that his planned afterlife is a failure. Anger begins. He cries out.
05 transformation
A moment of calm. His belief of what his spirit will be in the afterlife was not a true interpretation. He becomes something else and accepts it.
06 the realization of being forgotten
The anger and sadness intensifies.
07 a memory, the wind
All that was once known, fades away.
08 the thirst (haunt)
The offerings of the living were to satisfy his thirst. Now all he desires is revenge.
09 a shadowy version of life
An eternity of sadness left to haunt the world.
